ARTIST STATEMENT

Through site-specific environmental installations and photography I seek to challenge the predictability of expectations & ‘cultural homogeneity’. My art practice is inspired by the complexities, equilibrium and fragility of the natural environment and by the ways in which our man-made systems work within, or in opposition to, these natural systems. The focus of my practice is the concept of transition, including notions of unpredictability, vulnerability, deterioration and ephemerality. It is informed by issues relating to human ecology, cultural displacement, consumption and materialism.

ARTISTS BIO

Since gaining her Sculpture Degree at Norwich School of Art, UK, 1983, later completing her Masters at Portsmouth University, UK, 2006, Kidall has worked consistently in developing her international arts practice. She has exhibited throughout the UK, Australia and in 2012 she representing Australia in Kiev, Ukraine at the inaugural International Contemporary Sculpture Festival in collaboration with Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK, and in 2014 was invited to create a work in Grand Canaria, Spain, for AININ Symposium. And In 2015 Kidall was the feature artist for “Step In Stone” an ambitious sculpture trail funded by the Arts Council England sited in abandoned stone quarries in Somerset, UK. In 2016 she will travel to New Zealand to create a new work for Harbourview Sculpture Trail.

Kidall’s passion for making site-specific environmental installations and showing art works beyond the confines of the gallery lead her to a variety of opportunities to create works in the natural environment, in medieval or industrial buildings. The ragged exposed cliff tops at SCULPTURE BY THE SEA, Bondi, Australia, have offered a number of challenging sites to create installations 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013; receiving the Sydney Water Environmental Subsidy award, 2013. In 2012 Kidall took the challenge of siting a work in the lake at the University of Western Sydney Sculpture Awards and again a floating work on the same lake in 2014. Earlier 2014 she created a work in the spectacular arid landscape in South Australia, for the Palmer Sculpture Biennale and at Scenic World Sculpture Awards in the famous Blue Mountains at the site of the abandoned Katoomba Coal Mines. Recently short listed for the Intra Regionale_festival of site specific art, in Hannover, Germany, a commission for a floating work on a medieval castle’s moat, for Environmental Arts Festival Scotland, UK and the Environmental Art Biennale Program, I-Park, Connecticut USA 2013 & 2015.

Kidall has lectured at University of NSW (UNSW) and University of Technology (UTS), Sydney in Design & Sustainability, for the Interior Architecture BA and lectured at University College of the Creative Arts (UCCA) Surrey, UK with Industrial Design/Sustainable Futures BA. Previously, while maintain her art practice, she has many years of experience working in community arts and with architectural firms as an Interior Designer in design and project management.
